I played Harvest Moon 64 until the cartridge stopped saving, so I came to this with expectations that were unreasonable and it met all of them.
What ConcernedApe understood, that the later Harvest Moon games forgot, is that the farming is the metronome and the town is the point. The crops give you a reason to get up; the villagers are why you stay. And unlike its ancestors, the villagers here have interior lives that aren't gated behind marriage — Pam's drinking, Shane's depression, Kent coming back from a war the game never names. That's a considerable step up in writing from a genre that used to be about giving a girl an egg every day until she liked you.
One person made this and then supported it for a decade for free.
An S. The best game in its genre and one of the best arguments for solo development that exists.
