I did not touch the main quest for about fifteen hours and the game was completely fine with that, which surprised me.
The Lake of Nine is a much better designed space than it gets credit for. The water level dropping and revealing whole areas you'd rowed past is the kind of thing that would be a set piece in another game and here it's just how the map works. Rowing around listening to Mimir tell stories is genuinely one of my favourite things in any game — it's the only exposition delivery system I've ever actively gone looking for.
What holds it at an A for me is that the realms outside Midgard are thin. Helheim and Niflheim in particular are the same corridor with a different filter, and after the care put into the lake it's a noticeable drop.
Great game with one very good map and several placeholder ones.
