CS2 replaced a finished game with an unfinished one and we all just accepted it because there was no alternative.
GO at the end of its life was about as polished as a competitive shooter gets. Ten years of iteration, a mature map pool, tooling the community had built around it. The transition deleted a lot of that overnight — community servers broken for months, workshop maps in limbo, the entire surf and bhop ecosystem left to rot. Some of it came back. Plenty didn't.
What we got in return is better lighting and a smoke system that is genuinely excellent, and I want to give real credit for the volumetric smokes because they're the first actual change to CS tactics in fifteen years.
But a B is honest. Two and a half years in and the thing still has worse performance than the game it replaced, on the same hardware, for a visual upgrade nobody in the competitive scene asked for.
