Super Metroid is the best game ever made and this is the only thing since that has made me reconsider that, which is not a sentence I write lightly.
What it understands, that most of the genre doesn't, is that a map is a memory test before it's a navigation aid. Not having the map until you find Cornifer means the first pass through every area is spent actually looking at it — where the benches are, which door you couldn't open, where that sound came from. By the time you can see the map, you already know the place. Every game that hands you a full map on entry loses that and doesn't know it's lost anything.
Hallownest is also the best-realised world in the genre. It has an economy, a history, and a sense that it was going somewhere before you arrived.
Fifteen euros. Made by three people. An S and it's not a close call.
